Google Image Search is a very good photo search engine. It is NOT automatically filtered to remove potentially offensive content (although you can select filtering on the advanced search page, which the text link leads to). In 2008, Google began hosting an archive of millions of photos which have appeared in LIFE magazine. You can also search the LIFE photo archive with the form below. MSN Search formerly used an index provided by Inktomi. Since Yahoo! bought Inktomi, MSN is now using their own search index and software. Their image search produces fewer results than Google or Yahoo! (because they began indexing more recently), but they are catching up rapidly. search help - español Yahoo! Image Search has their own index (acquired when they bought Inktomi a couple years ago), and provides image search for Lycos, and Yahoo! subsidiaries AltaVista and FAST. The Yahoo! form included here with some advanced search options; there are a few more options available if you use the text link. Alta Vista Image Search includes a family filter that is now OFF by default. To search with the filter on, go to Alta Vista's search page. Unfortunately, the AltaVista & FAST search engines (both owned by Yahoo! now), as well as Lycos, now produce results similar or identical to Yahoo's. But the forms do offer some different options. Lycos Multimedia Search unfortunately now produces image results similar or identical to AltaVista, Yahoo, & FAST. However, you can also search for video or audio with this form. The FAST Multimedia Search engine now produces results similar or identical to AltaVista, Yahoo, & Lycos. But the forms do offer some different options. With this FAST form, you can also search for streaming video, MP3s, or news. Dogpile search includes Yahoo! video, mp3, and other multimedia search, Yahoo! image search, news search that indexes the first paragraph of stories from 2,300 news websites, and web metasearch that combines Google, Yahoo!, MSN, & AskJeeves results: picsearch Photo Search is excellent at locating highly relevant images, including very few useless images, and eliminating potentially offensive content. With picsearch, the "family filter" is on at all times, and cannot be bypassed. BestPicturesOf.com combines photo search results from Google, Bing, and Flickr on one page. Daylife News Photos finds Associated Press, Reuters, and Agence France Presse/Getty news photos which are sometimes kept on the server indefinitely, and have a large thumbnail image index. The photos from DayLife are also larger than the pics that Yahoo! provides. Yahoo! News Photo Search searches for Associated Press news photos from 30 days ago up to the current day. search tips |

IrfanView (a free download) is an image viewing program for Windows that allows you to view many file types, cleanly resize and crop images, apply effects to images, organize them into slide shows, and more. |
